ZINE CLUB

Calling all creatives! If you’re a person between 10 and 18, interested in drawing, doodling, creative writing, comics, collage, or other forms of self-expression, zine-making is the perfect art form for you!

What’s a zine? It’s pronounced “zeen,” short for magazine. It’s a self-published booklet of art, writing, or anything else we see fit to print. Zine Club will be a self-publishing co-op, where teens can work with like-minded peers to create a series of zines exploring ideas of their own choice.

Workshop leader Lisa Huffaker founded White Rock Zine Machine, a collaborative project offering zines through funky, sculptural vending machines. So far, White Rock Zine Machine has popped up in bookstores, galleries, and museums, been featured in D Magazine, and presented the work of dozens of writers and artists in over 8,400 zines! Zine Club members will learn about every aspect of zine-making, from art and creative writing, to analog and digital layout strategies, to producing a run of multiple copies. Once our work is complete, we’ll invite friends and family to celebrate at our launch party and reading. Zine Club members will go home with a copy of every zine in our series, plus ten copies of their own zine. Remaining zines will fill the original White Rock Zine Machine, hosted in Oil and Cotton’s shop, to be sold to lucky readers for a quarter a pop.

Come learn the ins and outs of collaborative self-publishing, and make friends with other D.I.Y. creatives who are ready to seize this empowering art form and reinvent it for ourselves!
